Pros: far more affordable than hardwood or tile, scratch-resistant enough for kids and pets, easy to clean with a broom or damp mop, quick to install with click-lock boards, and available in many realistic designs.
Cons: it cannot be sanded and refinished like hardwood; standard laminate can swell if water sits on it; without a good underlayment it can sound hollow; and it looks like wood but does not feel exactly like it underfoot.
Many newer laminate and vinyl planks use a 5G locking system: a locking profile on the long edge and a plastic insert on the short edge, so each plank is simply pushed down into place instead of angled and tapped. Compared with older 2G click systems, it locks on all four sides, installs faster and, in 5G Dry versions, keeps water out of the seams better. The boards can cost a little more, but the joint is stronger and the floor goes in quicker.
We help you pick the right product, prepare the subfloor and install the floor, with clean transitions and trims, whether it is one room or the whole house. Comparing options? See our vinyl or laminate guide and our vinyl flooring page.
